One of the UK’s longest-established orthotics providers is entering its most ambitious period of growth in more than a century. Peacocks Medical Group, which has been operating for 123 years, has announced a major expansion that includes a new manufacturing facility, a shift to automated production and the launch of its own branded product range. The news was reported by THIIS Magazine.
Having doubled in size over the past five years, the company has opened a second manufacturing site in Sheffield to complement its long-established headquarters in Newcastle. The 4,000 square foot facility, which opened in early July, is intended to meet growing demand across Peacocks’ expanding NHS contract portfolio and will increase the group’s production capacity by around 30 per cent. The company says it now has more than 47 clinicians embedded within NHS partner Trusts and over 60 technicians at its Newcastle base.
Both sites are moving towards high-technology, automated production, incorporating 3D manufacturing and robotics. The company describes this as a fundamental shift rather than an incremental upgrade, aimed at making sure patients receive the products they need on time. For the wider sector, it is a notable example of how advanced manufacturing is reaching parts of the mobility and assistive technology market that have traditionally relied on hand production.
Alongside the manufacturing investment, Peacocks is launching its own branded product range and has signed a series of exclusive UK distribution agreements with specialist manufacturers including Wellwalking, Fito, On Zen and MediRoyal, with further deals said to be in advanced stages. The company says these partnerships will bring new clinical technologies and expanded patient choice to NHS clinicians and commissioners.
David Stevens, CEO at Peacocks Medical Group, called it a defining moment for the business, saying its growth over the past five years reflects the trust NHS partners have placed in it. With the Sheffield site operational and a new product range coming to market, he said the company was better placed than ever to deliver for patients.
Orthotics, which includes devices such as insoles, braces and supports, plays an important role in helping people stay mobile and comfortable, often working alongside walking aids and other mobility aids. Expansion by an established NHS supplier is generally welcome news for patients, as it can mean shorter waits and a broader choice of clinically supported products.
