The European stairlift market has reached a value of $383.1 million (approximately £303 million) in 2026, according to new analysis from Mordor Intelligence. The market is projected to grow to $499.9 million (roughly £395 million) by 2031, reflecting sustained demand driven by an ageing population and a growing preference for ageing in place.
The UK remains one of the largest markets for stairlifts in Europe, with the country’s over-65 population now exceeding one-fifth of the total. This demographic shift is steadily enlarging the addressable market for mobility equipment manufacturers and installers.
Key trends shaping the market include a shift towards modular rail systems and factory-standardised components. These innovations are helping manufacturers trim installation times, which has been a persistent barrier for curved stairlift adoption. With shorter installation windows and lower fitting costs, curved models are gaining traction among homeowners with more complex staircases.
The market remains moderately fragmented, with major players including Stannah, ThyssenKrupp Elevator Technology, and Handicare Group competing alongside regional and independent installers. In the UK, stairlift prices for 2026 range from around £1,800 for a straight model to £8,000 or more for complex curved installations.
An emerging competitor to the traditional stairlift is the through-the-floor home lift. An increasing number of British homeowners are choosing residential lift elevators as a more elegant and future-proof alternative, particularly in homes where a stairlift would require significant modifications to the staircase layout.
For homeowners weighing their options, the choice between a stairlift and a home lift often comes down to budget, the layout of the property, and long-term needs. Those looking for help with costs may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant or could consider stairlift rental as a more affordable short-term solution.
