The Monarch Obsidian, a powerful road-legal mobility scooter built for longer journeys, has been added to the Motability Scheme product list for the period running to the end of June 2026. It gives scheme customers who want a larger, more capable Class 3 scooter another strong option for days out and longer trips.
The Obsidian is a Class 3 scooter, meaning it is legal for use on the road at up to 8mph and on pavements at the reduced 4mph limit. Monarch quotes a range of up to 37 miles on a single charge, powered by a 650W motor, with large 14-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels for improved stability and ground clearance over uneven surfaces. A captain’s seat with adjustable positioning and armrests adds comfort for longer outings. Full specifications are listed on the Monarch Mobility website.
Its inclusion on the scheme is notable because it sits at the heavier-duty end of the scooter market, where range and weight capacity matter most. For users who regularly travel further from home, or who need air-filled tyres for comfort on mixed surfaces, a scooter like the Obsidian can be a more practical choice than a smaller boot or pavement model. The Motability Scheme’s latest additions are summarised in its scheme news update.
That said, a larger Class 3 scooter is not the right answer for everyone. These machines are heavier, need more storage space and cannot easily be folded into a car boot. If your journeys are mostly short trips to local shops, a lighter mobility scooter may be more convenient. Our guide explains the differences between the classes and how to match a scooter to your typical routes.
Anyone considering the Obsidian, whether through Motability or as an outright purchase, should arrange a test drive first. Check that you can comfortably manage the controls, that the seat suits your posture, and that you have somewhere secure and weatherproof to store and charge it. It is also worth confirming insurance, servicing arrangements and the cost of replacement batteries over time.
Road-legal scooters carry real responsibilities, and users should be familiar with the rules covering pavements, crossings and road use.
