The Motability Scheme has added several new powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters to its product range for Q2 2026, giving disabled people more choice when leasing mobility equipment through their disability benefits. The updated range includes models from leading manufacturers and features a number of zero-advance-payment options, making them accessible to scheme customers without any upfront cost.
The Motability Scheme allows people who receive the higher-rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, or the Enhanced Rate of the mobility component of Adult Disability Payment in Scotland to lease a car, powered wheelchair, or mobility scooter. Customers assign their weekly mobility allowance to the scheme and receive the vehicle along with comprehensive insurance, breakdown cover, servicing, repairs, and tyre or battery replacement for the duration of the lease.
For powered wheelchairs and scooters, lease periods are typically three years for scooters and five years for powered wheelchairs. According to the Motability Scheme, the Q2 2026 range includes both indoor/outdoor powered wheelchairs and Class 2 and Class 3 scooters. Class 2 scooters are designed for pavement use at up to 4mph, while Class 3 models can be used on roads at up to 8mph.
Eligibility for the scheme depends on receiving the correct benefit at the right rate. For PIP, customers must receive the Enhanced Rate of the mobility component, which is currently £75.75 per week. Those receiving only the Standard Rate are not eligible. The scheme is open to people of all ages, including children aged three and over for powered wheelchairs. A clinical assessment may be required to ensure the chosen device is suitable and that the customer can operate it safely.
Among the popular options available at nil Advance Payment are compact powered wheelchairs suitable for indoor and outdoor use, mid-range Class 2 scooters, and lightweight folding models designed for easy transport. For customers seeking higher-specification models with features such as suspension, higher weight capacity, or all-terrain capability, Advance Payments may apply. As noted on the Motability pricing page, Advance Payments vary by model and are clearly listed so customers can compare options before making a decision.
The scheme also covers essential accessories and adaptations, including specialist seating, posture supports, and kerb climbers. Customers who need bespoke modifications can discuss these with their Motability dealer during the assessment process. Repairs and maintenance throughout the lease are included, so customers do not face unexpected costs if their equipment needs servicing or parts replacement.
For those considering their options, it is worth comparing the Motability lease with outright purchase. Leasing through the scheme provides peace of mind with all-inclusive coverage, but purchasing outright gives ownership and the flexibility to choose from a wider range of suppliers. The cost of powered wheelchairs varies significantly depending on specification, ranging from around £1,500 for basic models to £10,000 or more for advanced units with tilt-in-space or elevating seats.
