Global wheelchair manufacturer Vermeiren is preparing to introduce a new fleet of mobility scooters to the UK retail market this year, expanding beyond its established portfolio of manual, active and powered wheelchairs. The move was confirmed in the June 2026 issue of trade publication THIIS Magazine.

Vermeiren is one of Europe’s longest-established mobility manufacturers, with a heritage stretching back to 1957 in Belgium. In the UK it is best known among dealers and NHS services for its wheelchair range. A push into mobility scooters will put the company head-to-head with established scooter brands in showrooms across the country.

For consumers, more competition generally means more choice and sharper pricing. The UK scooter market is already busy, with brands competing on portability, battery range and suspension comfort, and retailers reporting steady demand from older buyers who want to stay independent. Industry analysts expect the UK mobility devices market to keep growing through the decade as the population ages.

The June issue of THIIS also features NRS-UK setting out its vision for innovative, sustainable products that support independence, underlining how sustainability is becoming a key battleground for mobility manufacturers, from recyclable materials to refurbishment programmes.

If you are considering a scooter this year, it pays to understand the basics before visiting a showroom. Class 2 scooters are limited to 4 mph and designed for pavements, while Class 3 scooters can travel at up to 8 mph on roads and must be registered with the DVLA. Our mobility scooters guide covers the differences in detail, and our mobility aids section looks at alternatives such as walking aids for people who need less support.

New models from Vermeiren are expected to appear in UK showrooms over the coming months. To try one when they arrive, find a mobility retailer near you through our directory.
