About OTOLIFT Stairlifts

Otolift is a Dutch stairlift manufacturer with an unusually long history. Its roots reach back to 1891, when the Ooms family opened an engineering workshop in South Holland, and the firm now holds a Dutch Royal designation. Every lift is designed and built at Otolift’s own 15,000 square metre factory in the Netherlands, and more than 200,000 have been sold across 45-plus countries, with one installed somewhere in the world every 19 minutes. In the UK, Otolift does not sell direct. Lifts are supplied, fitted and maintained by a network of independent dealers trained by Otolift’s UK team, so your contract and aftercare sit with a local specialist rather than a national call centre.

The Otolift range

Otolift is best known for curved stairlifts that run on a single tubular rail, which takes up noticeably less staircase room than rivals’ boxier rails.

  • Modul-Air and Modul-Air Smart: the flagship curved lift. Its single-tube rail measures just 60mm across, which Otolift states is the slimmest on the market, and its modular sections mean shorter lead times than one-piece curved rails. The Smart is the version currently promoted by Otolift UK.
  • Air: a compact single-tube curved lift designed with narrow and steep staircases in mind.
  • Line: the straight-staircase model, with a slim rail fixed to the stair treads rather than the wall.
  • Two: a twin-tube curved lift whose double rail follows the staircase closely. It is the brand’s most affordable curved option and the best-selling stairlift in the Netherlands.

Every rail is made to measure, and the seat, arms and footrest fold away when the lift is parked.

Build quality and reliability

Otolift keeps the whole production process in-house, from rail bending to final assembly, rather than buying in major components. The company is the market leader in the Benelux countries, and its main ranges have stayed in production long enough that spare parts are plentiful and well understood by UK engineers. British dealers must complete Otolift’s own training before they can sell or install the lifts, and owner feedback on UK dealer review pages is generally strong, with the slim rail and quiet ride the most praised features.

Warranty and servicing

Because Otolift sells through dealers, the warranty on a UK installation comes from the installing company rather than directly from the Dutch factory, and terms vary between dealers. Two years of parts and labour cover on a new lift is common, with 12 months typical on a reconditioned one, and most dealers offer extended warranty or annual service plans beyond that. A yearly service is recommended, covering the drive system, safety sensors and batteries. Get the warranty terms in writing before you order, including call-out cover.

New or reconditioned

Reconditioned Otolift lifts are widely available in the UK, and the brand is a stronger candidate for a used curved lift than most. Traditional curved rails are welded for one staircase and rarely reusable, but because the Modul-Air rail is assembled from standard modular sections, dealers can offer reconditioned curved Otolifts far more readily. The Air and Two are also common on the reconditioned market. A properly reconditioned lift should come stripped, inspected, fitted with new batteries and covered by its own parts and labour warranty. Prices vary by staircase, so compare like-for-like quotes before deciding.

How Otolift compares

Against Stannah and Acorn, Otolift’s pitch is engineering rather than brand recognition. Stannah builds a broad range and runs its own national sales and service operation. Acorn concentrates on quick-to-fit modular systems sold direct. Otolift specialises in slim single-tube curved rails, which makes it well worth shortlisting for narrow, steep or awkward curved staircases where a bulky rail would dominate the stairs. The trade-off is that your experience depends on the local dealer, so check reviews of the installer as carefully as the product.

At a glance

  • Dutch family firm with roots back to 1891, holder of a Royal designation

  • Typical dealer warranty: two years on new lifts, 12 months on reconditioned (terms vary by dealer)

Frequently asked questions

Who installs Otolift stairlifts in the UK?

Independent UK dealers trained by Otolift’s UK team. Request a quote through Otolift UK, which passes you to a local dealer, or approach an approved dealer directly; the same firm surveys, installs and services the lift.

Is Otolift better than Stannah or Acorn?

It depends on the staircase. Otolift’s slim single-tube curved rails are among the best solutions for narrow or steep stairs, while Stannah offers a wider model range with national in-house servicing and Acorn focuses on fast modular installations sold direct. Judge the individual quote, the rail design and the local support rather than the badge alone.

Do Otolift stairlifts qualify for VAT relief?

Yes. Stairlifts bought for someone who is chronically sick or disabled qualify for zero-rated VAT in the UK. Your dealer will ask you to sign a short eligibility declaration when you order, and the relief covers reconditioned lifts and installation too.

Can an Otolift fit a narrow or steep staircase?

This is where the brand is strongest. The Air was designed for narrow and steep flights, and the 60mm Modul-Air rail leaves more clear stair width than most curved systems.

Are reconditioned Otolift stairlifts available?

Yes, several UK dealers sell reconditioned Air, Two and Modul-Air lifts. The modular rail design means even curved models can be refurbished and refitted, which is unusual in the industry. Expect a 12-month warranty rather than two years.
