Amazon was cheaper or level on 11 of 14: what identical rollators, transit chairs and perching stools cost on Amazon vs UK specialists, priced 21 September 2026

We priced 15 identical rollators, transit wheelchairs and perching stools on Amazon and at four UK mobility specialists between 07:30 and 07:50 BST on Monday 21 September 2026. Fourteen could be compared. At full price, delivery included, Amazon was cheaper or level on 11 of the 14. With VAT relief, a specialist was cheaper on 8 of the 14. The catch runs both ways. Amazon’s lowest prices mostly came from third-party sellers, and three of the four items Amazon sold itself said “usually dispatched within 6 to 7 months”. Specialists take the VAT off at checkout; Amazon refunds it afterwards, and only on items it sells itself.

What we found

• 11 of 14: Amazon was cheaper on 8 and the same price on 3, at full price with delivery. The median item was £3.44 cheaper on Amazon, 2.8% of the Amazon price.
• 8 of 14: a specialist was cheaper once VAT relief was applied. The median item was then £5.55 cheaper at a specialist.
• £60.00: the biggest full-price gap, on the Uniscan Triumph rollator, in the specialists’ favour. Amazon’s own offer on it said dispatch in 6 to 7 months.
• 9 of 15: Amazon offers that came from a third-party seller trading as NRS-UK (7) or from one of the specialists we priced (2). On those, “Amazon vs specialist” is often the same stock on two shop fronts.

The prices, item by item

Every price includes VAT unless it sits in the VAT-relief column. Delivery is included, to a mainland England postcode (M1 1AA). The specialist figure is the cheapest in-stock price across the four specialists. Green fill marks the cheaper channel at full price and yellow marks a tie. A dark outline marks the cheaper channel for a buyer who qualifies for VAT relief.

¹ Amazon’s featured offer, sold by Amazon, said “usually dispatched within 6 to 7 months”. On the Compact Easy Rollator another Amazon seller had it in stock at £149.99, the same as the cheapest specialist. How to read the gap

VAT relief is where specialists win

If you are disabled or have a long-term illness and are buying for your own use, eligible equipment is zero-rated for VAT. HMRC’s guidance (VAT Notice 701/7) says a person “does not have to be registered disabled”. You sign a short declaration. Do not sign one if you do not qualify.

All four specialists we priced list a VAT-relief price that you pay at checkout. Amazon does it differently. Its help page says eligible customers fill in a declaration form after the order and get a refund. Its declaration form adds that if the order “was not sold by Amazon.co.uk, you will need to contact the seller directly to reclaim the VAT”. In this basket, 11 of the 15 Amazon offers came from third-party sellers, so for most rows a qualifying buyer would have to ask the seller.

At least two of the specialists show the VAT-relief price first on the product page. If you do not qualify, the price at checkout is 20% higher than the number you first saw.

Delivery barely moved the result

Every Amazon offer showed free delivery to a logged-out shopper. For third-party sellers that was a first-order offer; a returning customer without Prime may pay a delivery charge we could not see. The specialists deliver free above £50 or £75 and charge £4.95 to £4.99 below that. Delivery did not change which channel was cheaper on any of the 14 rows, at full price or with VAT relief. It added £4.95 or £4.99 to the specialist price on four perching stools.

When a specialist makes more sense

Buy from a specialist if you qualify for VAT relief, if you want to try a chair or rollator in a showroom first, or if the item needs fitting or adjusting to your height. The same applies to anything heavy, where a return is a job in itself. Specialist returns windows were 14 to 30 days; Amazon’s listings said 30 days.

When Amazon makes more sense

Use Amazon for small aids you already know, when you do not qualify for VAT relief and want it quickly. Check who the seller is before you pay. Amazon’s own offers on three of these items would have taken months, and a third-party seller’s warranty and returns terms are the seller’s, not Amazon’s.

By category

Rollators

Amazon was cheaper on three of five, level on one, dearer on one. The median gap was £4.99 in Amazon’s favour, and it stayed in Amazon’s favour with VAT relief (median £4.16), helped by two items Amazon sells itself and refunds VAT on. The cheapest matched rollator was the NRS Compact Easy Plus in silver (S50608): £95.75 on Amazon or at a specialist, or £79.79 at a specialist with VAT relief. Buy it on Amazon if you do not qualify; buy it from a specialist if you do.

Transit wheelchairs

Only one model matched cleanly, the NRS Transit-Lite attendant chair, in two colours. That is thin, and we say so. At full price the gap was £0 on the blue and £4.03 on the grey, in Amazon’s favour. With VAT relief a specialist was £30.67 and £26.64 cheaper. On both colours the Amazon seller was one of the specialists we priced. If you qualify for VAT relief, search part number N29210 (blue) or N43528 (grey) at a specialist and pay £153.35.

Perching stools

Amazon was cheaper on four of seven, level on one, dearer on two. With VAT relief a specialist was cheaper on four. The cheapest in the basket was the NRS Compact stool with arms and back (M48477) at £49.00 on Amazon. With VAT relief, the cheapest was the NRS PU moulded stool with arms and padded back (L35580) at £48.02 from a specialist, including £4.99 delivery.

How we did it

• Date and time: Monday 21 September 2026, 07:30 to 07:50 BST. Every price in the table was taken in that window. Amazon’s VAT-eligibility labels were read shortly afterwards, the same morning.
• Channels: Amazon UK, and four UK online retailers whose main business is mobility and daily-living equipment. We call them specialists A to D and do not name them. The piece measures the gap between channels, and anyone can repeat it by searching the part numbers. General retailers (a chemist chain, a department store, a DIY chain) were left out.
• Matching rule: same brand, same model, same size and colour. Eleven rows share a manufacturer part number on both channels. Four are matched on name, colour and specification, because the two channels use different code systems or Amazon shows no code; an editor checked each of those before pricing. Anything we could not prove identical was dropped.
• Amazon price: the featured offer (“Buy Box”) as shown to a shopper who is not logged in, with the seller recorded. Where there was no featured offer we used the lowest offer. Where the featured offer said dispatch in 6 to 7 months we kept it and flagged it.
• Specialist price: the price with VAT and the VAT-relief price, both as listed, plus the delivery charge to M1 1AA. For one specialist the charge was read from a cart quote to that postcode; for the others from their published delivery terms.
• Headline comparison: price plus delivery. VAT relief is a second comparison. For Amazon we applied the VAT refund only where Amazon sold the item and the listing said it was eligible.
• Counting: a row is “cheaper” if the gap is at least 1p. Medians are reported by category and for all 14 compared rows. We did not average across categories.
• Excluded: the beige Let’s Go Out rollator (no specialist had it in stock). Also excluded: the Days Whirl chair (we could not prove the attendant version matched), the Topro Troja (the specialist sold a forearm version), the Rollz Flex 2 (no colour in common) and all three-wheel walkers.
• One large chain had no rows at all. Its catalogue search returned no Drive, Aidapt or NRS products, and none of the 38 rollator, transit-chair and perching-stool names we searched from its range came back on Amazon as the same model. It sells mostly own-label ranges. Its price-match terms require the rival product to be “identical in terms of size, colour, specifications, model”, which own-label ranges rarely meet.
• Brand note: most of this basket carries the NRS name. NRS Healthcare Ltd is in liquidation (Companies House, company 11480843, read 21 September 2026), after winding-up orders made on 1 August 2025. Its product sales business was sold in August 2025 (THIIS, 28 August 2025) and NRS-branded products are still on sale. The old NRS web shop did not load for us on 21 September 2026.

Do I pay VAT on a rollator, wheelchair or perching stool?

Not if you are disabled or have a long-term illness, the item is designed for disabled people, and you are buying it for your own use. You sign a declaration; you do not need to be registered disabled. Being older does not qualify on its own. Every item in this audit was listed with a VAT-relief price by at least one specialist.

Can I get VAT relief on Amazon?

Only after you have paid, and only on items sold by Amazon itself. Amazon asks eligible customers to send a declaration form after ordering and refunds the VAT. For items from third-party sellers, its form says to contact the seller. In this audit 11 of the 15 Amazon offers came from third-party sellers.

Do specialist shops price-match Amazon?

Some offer price matching, with conditions. One large chain’s terms require the rival product to be identical in size, colour, specification and model, with delivery added. Much of that chain’s range is own-label, so an identical product on Amazon is rare. Ask before you buy, and quote the part number.

Can I get a perching stool on the NHS?

Usually through your council, not the NHS directly. The NHS says equipment and small adaptations “will be provided for free if you’re assessed as needing them”. Ask your council’s adult social care team for a needs assessment. An occupational therapist will often suggest a perching stool for kitchen or bathroom tasks.

What did this audit find on 21 September 2026?

NRS Healthcare Ltd is in liquidation, after winding-up orders on 1 August 2025. Its product sales business was sold later that month, and NRS-branded equipment is still sold online, including on Amazon.
