This page compares seven transfer boards (also called slide boards or banana boards) sold in the UK. We have not used them. We read each maker’s product page and instructions for use, then noted the user weight limit, length, width, board weight, material, shape, grip and guarantee. Where a figure is not in any maker document we opened, the table says so.
The weight limits vary more than the boards look like they should: the two Homecraft plywood boards are rated to 100kg in their instructions, while the NRS long wooden board is rated to 190kg. The Homecraft Short Transfer Board’s own product page gives both 100kg and 190kg, so we list 100kg.
The short answer
- Days Curved Transfer Board: best for assisted car and bed transfers: 37cm wide, rated to 152kg.
- Aidapt Straight Transfer Board: best lightweight straight board: 0.91kg, rated to 150kg.
- NRS Plastic Transfer Board (Short): best for small gaps: 49.5cm long, with a 24 month guarantee.
- Aidapt Curved Transfer Board: best curved board to fit round a wheelchair tyre: notched, rated to 150kg.
- NRS Long Wooden Transfer Board: highest weight limit here: 190kg, but the thinnest documents.
- Homecraft Transfer Board with Handholes: best for grip at both ends: 76cm long, but rated to 100kg.
- Homecraft Short Transfer Board: cheap and short at 60cm, but its page gives both 100kg and 190kg.
What checking the documents turned up
1 of the 7 maker product pages gives two different weight limits for the same board. The Homecraft Short Transfer Board page says “Maximum user weight 100KG/15st” in its description and “Maximum User Weight 190kg/30st” in its specification table. The instructions say 100kg, so we list 100kg.
2 of the 7 boards are rated to 100kg in the maker’s instructions: both Homecraft plywood boards. That is the lowest limit in this line-up. One dealer we checked, Complete Care Shop, lists 190kg for both boards.
Only 1 of the 7 boards is rated above 152kg in the maker’s documents: the NRS Long Wooden Transfer Board at 190kg. Its instructions give no width and no board weight, and we found no UK dealer (other than Amazon) listing it on 18 September 2026.
5 of the 7 boards have no guarantee period in their own product documents. Only the two NRS boards state one in their instructions (24 months for the plastic board, 12 months for the wooden board). Performance Health’s terms of sale give 12 months for goods it sells, which covers the Homecraft and Days boards bought from its shop. We found no guarantee period for the Aidapt boards.
How we checked, and what we did not do
We did not buy, use or measure any of these products. For each one we opened the manufacturer’s UK product page and the documents it links to (leaflet, spec sheet, instructions for use), and in a few cases a copy of the maker’s instructions hosted by a dealer where the maker does not host its own. We recorded each figure with the document it came from.
Where two of the maker’s documents give different figures for the same thing, we apply the least-favourable-figure rule: the table shows the less flattering one and the text shows both. Buyers who plan around the least favourable figure are never caught out; buyers who plan around the best one sometimes are.
For a transfer board the figure that matters most is the maximum user weight, and it is also the figure makers state least consistently, so we read it on the product page and in the instructions and list the lower one. Length matters because the board has to reach well onto both surfaces: a 50cm board suits a close wheelchair to bed gap, a 70 to 76cm board suits a car seat or a wider gap. Width is how much of the board you sit on during the slide. Board weight is what a user or carer lifts into place, usually one-handed. We also noted whether the maker mentions a non-slip underside, handholes or a handle, and how the maker says to clean it. None of the documents we opened is written for use inside a wet bath or shower, so we have not rated any board for that.
We only included products from makers with published UK documents, and only products currently listed on Amazon UK so each pick can carry a live price box. Rankings are our judgement from the documents. No manufacturer or retailer paid to appear, and none saw this page before publication. If you think we have a figure wrong, email hello@reviewmobility.co.uk with the document and we will correct it.
All 7 compared
Figures are the maker’s own. Where the maker’s documents disagree, the table shows the less favourable figure (see each pick for both). Amazon prices change often, so they are in the live boxes, not the table.
| # | Model | Shape and material | Max user | Length x width | Board weight | Guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Days Curved Transfer Board | Curved, polypropylene, non-slip pads | 152kg | 71 x 37cm | 1.95kg | 12 months (seller terms) |
| 2 | Aidapt Straight Transfer Board | Straight, plastic, non-slip strips | 150kg | 70 x 20cm | 0.91kg | Not published |
| 3 | NRS Plastic Transfer Board (Short) | Straight, polyethylene, non-slip pads | 127kg | 49.5 x 20cm | 0.95kg | 24 months |
| 4 | Aidapt Curved Transfer Board | Curved, plastic, non-slip strips | 150kg | 72.7 x 20cm | 1.78kg | Not published |

| 7 | Homecraft Short Transfer Board | Straight, plywood | 100kg | 60 x 21cm | 1.1kg | 12 months (seller terms) |
Table checked 18 September 2026. Max user is the lower figure where a maker’s documents disagree; “seller terms” means the 12 month warranty in Performance Health’s terms of sale, which applies to goods bought from Performance Health.

1. Days Curved Transfer Board: best for assisted car and bed transfers
Performance Health sells this board as the Homecraft Curved Transfer Board (code 091120989, old code AA8835); dealers sell the same code under the Days name. It is the widest board here at 37cm, which gives more to sit on during the slide. The arc shape is meant to follow the sweep of an assisted transfer.
Our verdict (documents last checked 18 September 2026)
The Days Curved Transfer Board is the widest board we checked at 37cm, rated to 152kg in both its product page and its instructions.
Best for: people who transfer with a carer’s help into a car, onto a bed or onto a toilet, and who want a wide seating area.
Not for: anyone who has to lift the board one-handed often: at 1.95kg it is the heaviest board with a published weight, and it is only 71cm long.
| Max user | 152kg (24st) |
| Length | 71cm |
| Width | 37cm |
| Board weight | 1.95kg |
| Material | Polypropylene board with PVC pads |
| Shape | Curved (arc) |
| Grip | Slip-resistant pads underneath; no handholes mentioned |
| Cleaning | Household disinfectant or mild detergent and water |
| Guarantee | 12 months (Performance Health terms of sale) |
Where the maker’s own documents disagree
We found no disagreement between the maker’s documents. The product page says “Maximum user weight 152kg” and the instructions say “The board is not to be used to support more than 152 kg / 336 lb / 24 st”. The instructions also say it is “Not for people who have an allergic reaction to PVC”. One dealer we checked, Ability Superstore, lists the limit as “23 stone (152kg)”; the maker says 24 stone.
UK dealer prices on 18 September 2026: Complete Care Shop ยฃ46.24 (VAT exempt), Ability Superstore ยฃ55.83 (with VAT relief), Mobilityshop ยฃ57.99 (VAT exempt). Amazon’s live price is in the box below.

2. Aidapt Straight Transfer Board: best lightweight straight board
Aidapt’s Straight Transfer Board (code VM935D) is a wipe-clean plastic board, 70cm long and 20cm wide. The maker says it is ribbed on both faces and has non-slip strips underneath. At 0.91kg it is the lightest board in this line-up.
Our verdict (documents last checked 18 September 2026)
At 0.91kg and rated to 150kg, the Aidapt Straight Transfer Board is the lightest board we checked with a limit above 127kg.
Best for: people who carry a board between home and car and want a straight 70cm board that is easy to lift into place.
Not for: anyone who wants a published guarantee or a wide seat area: the board is 20cm wide and we found no guarantee period.
| Max user | 150kg (23 stone) |
| Length | 70cm |
| Width | 20cm |
| Board weight | 0.91kg |
| Material | Wipe-clean plastic |
| Shape | Straight |
| Grip | Ribbed top and underside, non-slip strips underneath |
| Guarantee | Not published |
Where the maker’s own documents disagree
We found no disagreement between the maker’s documents. The product page says “maximum user weight of up to 150 kg” and the shared instructions for VM935C and VM935D say “Maximum user weight: 150kg (23 stone)”. The instructions give the board weight as “Net product weight: 0.91kg”.
We found no UK dealer, other than Amazon, listing the VM935D on 18 September 2026. Aidapt’s own site shows prices only to trade account holders. Amazon’s live price is in the box below.
Documents read: Aidapt product page for the Straight Transfer Board (VM935D), Aidapt transfer board instructions covering VM935C and VM935D, read 18 September 2026.
3. NRS Plastic Transfer Board: best for small gaps
The NRS Plastic Transfer Board (code M10966) is the shortest board here at 49.5cm. It is made for self-assisted transfers across small gaps, with a handle at one end and non-slip pads underneath. It is the only board in this line-up with a 24 month guarantee in its instructions.
Our verdict (documents last checked 18 September 2026)
The NRS Plastic Transfer Board is 49.5cm long, weighs 950g and carries a 24 month guarantee, but its 127kg limit is the lowest of the plastic boards.
Best for: people who transfer themselves across a short gap, such as wheelchair to bed with the chair parked alongside.
Not for: anyone over 127kg, or anyone who needs to bridge a car door gap: at 49.5cm it may not reach far enough onto both seats.
| Max user | 127kg (20st) |
| Length | 49.5cm |
| Width | 20cm |
| Thickness | 1cm |
| Board weight | 950g |
| Material | High density polyethylene |
| Shape | Straight, tapered ends |
| Grip | Handle at one end, non-slip pads underneath |
| Guarantee | 24 months domestic use; 1 year in commercial settings |
Where the maker’s own documents disagree
We found no disagreement that matters. The instructions say “127 kg (20 st)” and “950 g (2 lb)”; the Complete Care Shop page, which now sells the NRS range, gives 127kg and rounds the weight to 0.9kg. The page says “every NRS product is guaranteed for 2 years”; the instructions say 24 months for domestic use.
UK dealer prices on 18 September 2026: Complete Care Shop ยฃ68.33 (VAT exempt). We found no other UK dealer, other than Amazon, listing it. Amazon’s live price is in the box below.
Documents read: Complete Care Shop product page for the NRS Plastic Transfer Board, NRS Plastic Transfer Board user instructions (M10966-UI-4, 22-01-2024), read 18 September 2026.
4. Aidapt Curved Transfer Board: best curved board for wheelchair transfers
Aidapt’s banana-shaped board (code VM935C) has cut-out notches that the maker says fit around wheelchair tyres or chair legs. It has an integrated handle and a hanging hole so it can hang on a wheelchair handle. The underside is ribbed with non-slip strips.
Our verdict (documents last checked 18 September 2026)
The Aidapt Curved Transfer Board is 72.7cm long, weighs 1.78kg and is rated to 150kg, with notches cut to clear a wheelchair tyre.
Best for: wheelchair users who slide sideways past a wheel and want a board that stores on the chair.
Not for: anyone who needs a wide seat area or a published guarantee: it is 20cm wide and we found no guarantee period.
| Max user | 150kg (23 stone) |
| Length | 72.7cm |
| Width | 20cm |
| Board weight | 1.78kg |
| Material | Wipe-clean plastic |
| Shape | Curved (banana) |
| Grip | Integrated handle, ribbed underside with non-slip strips |
| Guarantee | Not published |
Where the maker’s own documents disagree
We found no disagreement between the maker’s documents. The product page says “Suitable for patients up to 150 kg” and the instructions say “Maximum user weight: 150kg (23 stone)” and “Net product weight: 1.78kg”.
We found no UK dealer, other than Amazon, listing the VM935C on 18 September 2026. Aidapt’s own site shows prices only to trade account holders. Amazon’s live price is in the box below.
Documents read: Aidapt product page for the Curved Transfer Board (VM935C), Aidapt transfer board instructions covering VM935C and VM935D, read 18 September 2026.
5. NRS Long Wooden Transfer Board: highest weight limit
This is the long board (code F20433, 760mm) from the NRS wooden transfer board range, made from birch plywood with a clear lacquer finish. Its instructions rate it to 190kg, the highest limit in this line-up. The same instructions give no width, no board weight and say nothing about a non-slip underside or handholes.
Our verdict (documents last checked 18 September 2026)
The NRS Long Wooden Transfer Board is rated to 190kg with a 12 month guarantee, but its instructions publish no width or board weight.
Best for: heavier users, up to 190kg, who need a long straight board and have been shown how to use it.
Not for: buyers who want to compare board weight or width before buying: neither figure is in the maker’s instructions.
| Max user | 190kg (30st) |
| Length | 76cm |
| Width | Not published |
| Board weight | Not published |
| Material | Birch plywood with clear lacquer finish |
| Shape | Straight |
| Grip | Not stated |
| Guarantee | 12 months |
Where the maker’s own documents disagree
The two issues of the instructions we read (2018 and 2021) agree on 190kg and on a 12 month guarantee. One point to be aware of: Complete Care Shop, which took over the NRS product sales business in 2025, says on its NRS product pages that “every NRS product is guaranteed for 2 years”, while the wooden board instructions say “NRS Healthcare guarantee this product for a period of 12 months”. We list 12 months.
We found no UK dealer, other than Amazon, listing the F20433 on 18 September 2026. The NRS Healthcare web store did not load. Amazon’s live price is in the box below.
Documents read: NRS Healthcare user instructions for the wooden transfer board range (Iss4, 2018, and F20421-UI-5, 24-08-2021), read 18 September 2026.
6. Homecraft Transfer Board with Handholes: best for grip at both ends
This is the long version (code 091120724, old code AA8814) of Homecraft’s plywood board, 76cm by 21cm with a high gloss laminated finish. Handholes are cut into both ends. Both of the maker’s documents rate it to 100kg.
Our verdict (documents last checked 18 September 2026)
The Homecraft Transfer Board with Handholes is 76cm long with handholes at both ends, but its maker rates it to only 100kg.
Best for: lighter users, up to 100kg, who want a long board with a handhold at each end for positioning.
Not for: anyone near or over 100kg (15st); the NRS long board is rated to 190kg.
| Max user | 100kg (15st) |
| Length | 76cm |
| Width | 21cm |
| Board weight | 1.38kg |
| Material | Laminated plywood, high gloss finish |
| Shape | Straight, chamfered ends |
| Grip | Handholes at both ends |
| Guarantee | 12 months (Performance Health terms of sale) |
Where the maker’s own documents disagree
The maker’s documents agree. The product page says “Maximum User Weight 100kg/15st” and the instructions say “The board is not to be used to support more than 100kg / 15st”. One dealer we checked, Complete Care Shop, lists the limit as 190kg (30 stone).

Documents read: Performance Health product page for the Homecraft Transfer Board with Handholes, Wooden Transfer Boards instructions, Performance Health terms and conditions, read 18 September 2026.
7. Homecraft Short Transfer Board: cheapest short plywood board
The short version (code 091120633, old code AA8810) of Homecraft’s plywood board is 60cm by 21cm and weighs 1.1kg. It has a varnished top and chamfered ends, and no handholes. Its product page gives two different weight limits.
Our verdict (documents last checked 18 September 2026)
The Homecraft Short Transfer Board’s page gives both 100kg and 190kg; its instructions say 100kg, so we treat it as a 100kg board.
Best for: lighter users, up to 100kg, who need a short plain board for a close transfer.
Not for: anyone over 100kg, whatever the specification table says, and anyone who wants handholes.
| Max user | 100kg (15st); page also says 190kg |
| Length | 60cm |
| Width | 21cm |
| Board weight | 1.1kg |
| Material | Laminated plywood, varnished |
| Shape | Straight, chamfered ends |
| Grip | No handholes |
| Guarantee | 12 months (Performance Health terms of sale) |
Where the maker’s own documents disagree
The product page disagrees with itself. Its description says “Maximum user weight 100KG/15st.” Its specification table says “Maximum User Weight 190kg/30st”. The instructions, which cover this board and the Handholes board, say “The board is not to be used to support more than 100kg / 15st.” We list 100kg. One dealer we checked, Complete Care Shop, lists 190kg (30 stone).
UK prices on 18 September 2026: Complete Care Shop ยฃ25.83 (VAT exempt), Performance Health’s own shop ยฃ21.14 sale price (page notes it is eligible for VAT exemption). Amazon’s live price is in the box below.

Get shown how to use a board first
A board transfer should be taught by an occupational therapist or physiotherapist, who can check whether a board suits you, which length and shape, and how you or a carer should do it. The makers say the same thing: Performance Health’s instructions recommend its boards are not used “without previous training by a healthcare professional”, and Aidapt’s instructions say to consult the prescriber or physiotherapist if in any doubt. We do not give transfer technique on this page.
Many councils supply transfer boards through their community equipment service after an occupational therapy assessment, which also gets you that training. Our page on the NHS wheelchair service and community equipment explains who provides what. If a board is not enough, see our guides to mobility hoists and alternatives to a hoist.
Choosing a length
The board has to sit securely on both surfaces. The NRS wooden board instructions ask for at least 150mm of overlap on each surface, which is a useful rule of thumb when you measure: take the gap between the two seats and add at least 30cm. By that rule the 49.5cm NRS Plastic board covers a gap of up to about 19cm, and the 76cm boards cover up to about 46cm.
Check the weight limit before the length. The two Homecraft plywood boards are rated to 100kg, and the other five run from 127kg to 190kg.
Transfer boards and turntables
A turntable is a different tool: the person stands and is turned, where a board is for a seated slide. Aidapt’s Transfer Turntable (VM935A) is rated to 100kg on its product page, and its instructions say it “SHOULD ONLY BE USED WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A CARER” after a risk assessment. If standing is not safe, a board or a hoist is the usual alternative, and an OT should make that call.
Paying less: VAT relief and free loans
If you have a long-term illness or disability, equipment designed for disabled people and bought for your own use is often eligible for VAT relief, which takes a sixth off the VAT-inclusive price. UK dealers usually deduct it at checkout after you sign a short declaration, and many Amazon listings say whether an item is eligible. Not every seller handles it the same way; our check of how UK retailers handle VAT relief covers this. This is general information, not tax advice.
Before you buy, ask whether you can borrow it. Council community equipment services and the NHS lend a lot of this kind of equipment free after an assessment. Our guide to the NHS wheelchair service and council community equipment explains who to ask.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best transfer board in the UK?
From the seven boards we checked against their makers’ documents on 18 September 2026, the Days Curved Transfer Board (152kg, 37cm wide) is our first pick for assisted transfers, the Aidapt Straight Transfer Board (0.91kg, 150kg) is the lightest well-rated board, and the NRS Plastic Transfer Board (49.5cm, 24 month guarantee) suits short gaps. The right board depends on your weight, the gap and whether a carer helps.
What is the weight limit on a transfer board?
It varies from 100kg to 190kg across the seven boards we checked. Both Homecraft plywood boards are rated to 100kg in their instructions, the NRS Plastic board to 127kg, the Aidapt boards to 150kg, the Days Curved board to 152kg and the NRS Long Wooden board to 190kg.
Is a curved or straight transfer board better?
Neither is better for everyone. The makers describe curved boards for sweeping assisted transfers and for getting round obstacles such as a wheelchair tyre, while straight boards suit a direct slide across a gap. An occupational therapist can advise which shape fits your transfer.
How long should a transfer board be?
Long enough to rest securely on both surfaces. The NRS wooden board instructions ask for at least 150mm of overlap on each side, so add at least 30cm to the gap you need to cross. The boards we checked run from 49.5cm to 76cm.
Are plastic or wooden transfer boards lighter?
In this line-up the plastic straight boards are lightest: the Aidapt Straight at 0.91kg and the NRS Plastic at 950g. The Homecraft plywood boards weigh 1.1kg and 1.38kg, and the wide Days Curved plastic board weighs 1.95kg.
Can I use a transfer board on my own?
Some people do, but you should be assessed and shown how by an occupational therapist or physiotherapist first. Performance Health’s instructions recommend its boards are not used without previous training by a healthcare professional.
Can I get a transfer board free from the NHS or council?
Often, yes. Many councils supply transfer boards through their community equipment service after an occupational therapy assessment. Ask your GP or your council’s adult social care team for a referral.
Do I pay VAT on a transfer board?
Most UK dealers we checked list these boards as eligible for VAT relief if you are buying for a disabled person’s own use. The dealer prices on this page show the VAT basis each dealer states.
