A bath lift is a battery-powered seat that lowers you gently to the bottom of the bath and raises you back up, so you can keep having a proper soak without the risky part of getting down and up. It sits inside your existing bath, so there is no building work. Here is how to choose one, and five we rate.
How to choose a bath lift
Reclining or flat. A reclining backrest lets you lie back and makes standing easier at the end. Flat seats are lighter and cheaper but less comfortable for a long soak.
How low it goes. The lower the seat drops, the more of a real bath you get. Most good lifts take you close to the bottom of the tub.
Weight and fit. Check the user weight limit, and check the closed width of the seat against your bath. Also think about the weight of the unit itself, because you lift it out to charge and clean it.
Battery and handset. These run on a rechargeable battery with a floating waterproof handset. A safety feature stops the lift going down if the battery is too low to bring you back up, which is exactly what you want.

Drive is a big name in mobility equipment, and this bath lift is a sturdy, dependable option with good support. A sensible pick if you want a well-known brand behind it.
The catch: it is heavier than the Bellavita, so it is more of a job to take out of the bath. Around £260.
Best features: VOCIC AX07 Electric Bath Lift
A well-equipped lift with a waterproof motor and remote control that has been rating very highly with buyers. Comfortable recline and a smooth, quiet action.
The catch: it is a newer brand rather than a long-established one, so you are leaning on recent reviews. Around £308.
Best premium: VOCIC AX10 Bath Lift
The step-up VOCIC model, with a higher-end build and the same waterproof, remote-controlled design. For anyone who wants the most comfortable, best-appointed option.
The catch: it is the priciest here, and it is a lot of lift for a smaller bathroom. Around £410.
Best portable option: SuperHandy GoRise LT Bath and Floor Lift
This one doubles as a bath lift and a floor-rise lift, folds down, and is easy to move between rooms. Useful if you also want help getting up from the floor or a low chair.
The catch: because it does two jobs it is not as bath-shaped as a dedicated bath lift, so check it suits your tub. Around £400.

Frequently asked questions
Is a bath lift better than a walk-in bath?
A bath lift is far cheaper and needs no installation, so it is the sensible first step if your bathroom already has a normal bath. A walk-in bath is a bigger, fitted solution. Many people try a bath lift first.
Will a bath lift fit my bath?
Most fit standard baths, but always check the seat width against the flat area at the bottom of your tub, and check the weight limit. Very narrow or heavily curved baths can be trickier.
What happens if the battery runs out while I am in the bath?
Good bath lifts will not lower you unless there is enough charge to raise you again, so you should not get stuck. Still, charge it after use and keep an eye on the battery indicator.
Can I get a bath lift on the NHS?
Sometimes, after an occupational therapist assessment, though provision varies by area and there can be a wait. Many people buy their own to get the model they want sooner.
