Weighted blankets are sold on a lot of claims and supported by rather fewer. What can be said honestly is this: a 2026 randomised trial in acute dementia care found them safe and feasible, with no adverse effect on temperature, oxygen saturation, skin integrity or fall risk, around seven in ten people tolerated a full session, and there were signs of reduced agitation. That is a real finding and it is narrower than the marketing.
What we are not going to tell you is that they treat restless legs. We looked, and the only sources making that claim are retailers.
How to choose a weighted blanket
Weight: around ten per cent of body weight. That is the widely used rule of thumb. For a 70kg adult that is roughly 7 to 8kg. Heavier is not better, and a blanket that is too heavy is one that gets pushed onto the floor.
The safety rule that matters most. Do not use one with anybody who cannot lift it off themselves unaided. That includes frail older people with little upper body strength and anyone who could become distressed and be unable to get out from under it. This is the point the listings never make.
Check it is washable, and how. Many need a removable cover washed separately because the weighted inner cannot go in a domestic machine. A blanket that cannot be cleaned is a blanket with a short life.
Glass beads rather than plastic pellets. Glass beads are finer, quieter and distribute more evenly. Plastic pellets are cheaper, noisier and tend to clump.
Think about heat. Weighted blankets are warm by nature. For somebody who already overheats at night, a cooling cotton or bamboo cover matters more than the fill.

Sold on sleep rather than on anxiety, with a seven layer construction intended to stop the beads shifting. Same 8kg weight band as the pick above.
The catch: no blanket is a treatment for insomnia, and if poor sleep is persistent it is worth looking at pain, bladder, medication and daytime activity first. Around £28.

Warmest: teddy fleece weighted blanket
A fleece top side, which suits somebody who feels the cold and wants the weight and the warmth together. Comfortable to sit under in a chair as well as on a bed.
The catch: genuinely hot. Wrong choice for anybody who overheats or has night sweats, and warm bedding is not the answer for somebody who needs to stay cool. Around £27.

Best lighter option: 3kg reversible weighted blanket
The 3kg weight is the useful one here. It suits a smaller or frailer adult where ten per cent of body weight comes out well below the usual 8kg, and it is much easier to lift off.
The catch: at 3kg some people feel nothing at all, which is a reasonable outcome to discover cheaply rather than expensively. Around £14.

Frequently asked questions
How heavy should a weighted blanket be?
Around ten per cent of body weight is the usual guide, so roughly 7 to 8kg for a 70 to 80kg adult and 3 to 5kg for somebody smaller or frailer. Going heavier does not increase the benefit and makes the blanket harder to manage.
Are they safe for elderly people?
Only where the person can lift the blanket off themselves. Anyone who cannot, or who might become distressed and be unable to get out from under it, should not be left with one. A 2026 trial in acute dementia care found them safe and feasible under supervision, which is not the same as unsupervised overnight use.
Do they help with dementia agitation?
There are signs pointing that way in recent research, including reduced agitation and some reduction in medication use, and the evidence base is still small. It is reasonable to try one with supervision. It is not reasonable to present it as a treatment.
Do they help restless legs?
We could not find clinical evidence that they do. The claim appears widely on retailer sites and not in the literature. If restless legs are disturbing sleep regularly, that is worth investigating properly, since it has recognised causes including iron deficiency.
Can you wash one?
Usually the cover, separately, with the weighted inner spot cleaned or washed only if the label says so. Check before buying, because a blanket that cannot be cleaned will not last long in daily use.
Are they safe for children?
Not without professional advice. Weighted products for children carry specific safety guidance around weight and supervision, and they are not suitable for very young children at all. Ask the occupational therapist involved in the child’s care.
