Quick answer: Most mobility scooters run on two 12V batteries that are replaced together as a pair. On 27 September 2026, UK specialist retailers were charging roughly £32 to £165 a pair for the common AGM sizes (12Ah to 50Ah), £270 to £290 a pair for the big 75Ah batteries in 8mph scooters, and £120 to £446 for lithium packs. Gel costs more than AGM. Batteries last one to three years, so this is the one running cost every owner meets.

Prices by battery size
Scooter batteries are sized in amp-hours (Ah). Small boot scooters take 12Ah, mid-size pavement scooters 17Ah to 36Ah, and 8mph road scooters 50Ah to 75Ah. These are the pair prices we recorded across five UK specialists: Tayna, Battery Store, Discount Scooters, Alpha Batteries and SLK Mobility.

The spread within each row is real, not a rounding choice. At 50Ah, a pair of Battery Store’s own-brand AGMs was £160.66 while an OEM-spec Kymco Midi XLS set from Battery Trader was £275.99. Brand, warranty length and whether the set is scooter-specific account for most of the difference. Delivery adds £8 to £18 on heavy sizes at some retailers.

AGM, gel or lithium?
AGM (absorbed glass mat, the standard sealed lead-acid type) is the cheapest and what most scooters ship with. Gel costs roughly 30% to 50% more at the same size (a 40Ah MK gel was £172.80 as a single at Discount Scooters) and tolerates deep discharge and repeated daily use better. Lithium is the light option: a 12Ah pair was £119.98 and a 24Ah pair £199.98 at Alpha Batteries, with branded packs such as Pride’s Quest lithium at £446. Battery Group’s technical guide credits lithium with around three times the cycle life of AGM.
One warning that appears on the retailers’ own pages: lithium batteries need a lithium charger. Alpha Batteries states that float-charging lithium packs on a standard AGM or gel charger damages them. Budget for the charger if you switch chemistry, and check your controller is compatible with your scooter’s dealer first.
Always replace both batteries
Your scooter’s two 12V batteries work in series as one 24V pack. Battery Group’s guide puts the rule plainly: replace both at the same time, because pairing a new battery with an old one creates an imbalance that wears out both. A retailer selling you a single battery for a two-battery scooter is not doing you a favour.
Expect one to three years from a lead-acid pair depending on use and charging habits. Warning signs are shrinking range, slower charging, cutting out under load and a swollen case. VAT on replacement batteries
Replacement parts for a mobility scooter, batteries included, can qualify for 0% VAT if you are chronically sick or disabled, the same relief that applies to the scooter itself. In practice retailers handle this differently: Battery Store publishes VAT-exempt web prices alongside standard ones, while Alpha Batteries states it cannot offer VAT exemption on online battery purchases and TGA sells its Breeze battery without relief online. Fitting, or doing it yourself
Swapping scooter batteries is usually a screwdriver job: open the battery box, photograph the connections, swap like for like, reconnect. If you would rather not, mobility dealers fit what they supply; Mobility World, for example, advertises a fixed home-visit fitting charge of £179.94 including VAT, parts on top. Your old batteries are classed for recycling, not the bin. Battery retailers direct end-of-life batteries to household recycling centres, and some dealers take them back on fitting.
