The short answer: a Motability scooter is leased through the Motability Scheme and paid for out of the higher rate mobility part of PIP or DLA (£80 a week at current rates). Across the 151 scooter listings on Motability’s own search this month, the typical weekly cost ran from £23.54 for a car-boot scooter to £35.95 for a road scooter, and the rest of the allowance is still paid to you.
Leasing costs more than buying over time. At the typical prices, a pavement scooter on the scheme costs the same as buying one outright after about 51 weeks, and a road scooter after about 75 weeks. What the lease buys you is insurance, breakdown cover, repairs, tyres and faulty batteries for as long as you have it.
Last checked: 16 October 2026. We went through every page of Motability’s scooter search for all four scooter types, and read Motability’s pages on eligibility, payments, the lease package, ending a lease and the reassessment support package, its scooter handbook (June 2025 edition) and introductory guide (July 2025 edition), and GOV.UK’s PIP and DLA rate pages. Motability says the prices we recorded are valid from 1 October to 31 December 2026, with a new price list due on 1 January 2027.
Who this is for: anyone getting the higher rate mobility part of PIP, DLA or Adult Disability Payment who is weighing a scheme scooter against buying one, and family members helping them decide. It is not advice on your benefit claim. If you are unsure whether you qualify, check with Motability or a benefits adviser before you sign anything.
Who can get a Motability scooter
You need one of seven qualifying allowances, with at least 12 months left on the award when you first join. Motability lists them as:
| Allowance | Part that qualifies | Weekly amount |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Independence Payment (PIP) | Higher (enhanced) rate mobility part | £80.00 |
| Disability Living Allowance (DLA) | Higher rate mobility component | £80.00 |
| Adult Disability Payment (Scotland) | Enhanced rate mobility component | Set by Social Security Scotland |
| Child Disability Payment (Scotland) | Higher rate mobility component | Set by Social Security Scotland |
| Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance | Higher rate mobility component | Set by Social Security Scotland |
| Armed Forces Independence Payment | Named by Motability as qualifying | Set by the Ministry of Defence |
| War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement | Named by Motability as qualifying | Set by the Ministry of Defence |
PIP and DLA amounts from GOV.UK, read 16 October 2026. We have only printed the rates we read on the official page; for the others, check the paying body.
Three groups are often told about the scheme and then find they cannot use it.
People on the lower rate. The standard (lower) mobility rate of PIP, worth £30.30 a week, does not qualify, and neither does the daily living part of any of these benefits.
People over State Pension age claiming for the first time. New PIP claims can only be made between 16 and State Pension age.
After that the benefit on offer is Attendance Allowance, and Motability says Attendance Allowance does not qualify. If you already had PIP or DLA before reaching pension age and keep it, you can still use the scheme.
People who already lease a car. You can only have one lease at a time, so a Motability car and a Motability scooter cannot run side by side.
If you want to know how common the enhanced mobility rate is where you live, our PIP enhanced mobility league table shows how the share varies by area, and the Attendance Allowance league table does the same for the benefit paid after State Pension age.
Motability scooter prices per week, October 2026
Motability prints a weekly cost against every scooter on its search. We recorded all of them. Most models have one option; where a model has several, we used the cheapest for the typical figure and the dearest for the top of the range.
| Motability scooter type | Listings | Cheapest a week | Typical (median) a week | Dearest a week | Typical a year (52 weeks) | Left from £80 each week at the typical price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transportable (comes apart for a car) | 49 | £19.07 | £23.54 | £36.11 | £1,224 | £56.46 |
| Foldable | 12 | £20.64 | £25.09 | £33.30 | £1,304 | £54.91 |
| Pavement (4mph, Class 2) | 16 | £22.87 | £25.42 | £41.08 | £1,322 | £54.58 |
| Road-legal (8mph, Class 3) | 74 | £21.87 | £35.95 | £61.83 | £1,869 | £44.05 |
Source: Motability Scheme scooter search, PIP filter, every results page for each type, read 16 October 2026. A few models are listed under two types, so the 151 listings are slightly more than the number of separate models. No scooter we saw cost the full £80.

Every scooter on the list costs less than the full allowance. Motability’s own introductory guide says the same, and Citizens Advice Scotland explains that when the vehicle costs less than your mobility payment, the rest of it is paid to you. So a person on the enhanced rate who picks a typical boot scooter keeps a little over £56 a week.
The cheapest road scooter on the list (£21.87) costs less than the typical boot scooter. Prices overlap a great deal between types, so the type you need matters less to the bill than the model.
Prices can change during your lease, but not after you order
Motability says the price at the time you apply is locked, even if the price list changes later. From 1 July 2026, VAT and Insurance Premium Tax started to apply to most new leases. Motability’s December 2025 update said there were no immediate changes planned for scooters and powered wheelchairs while it reviews pricing, so check the price list that is live on the day you order.
What the Motability scooter lease includes
| Item | On the Motability lease | If you buy the scooter yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance | Included, through Direct Line Motability. Covers theft, damage that stops the scooter working safely, and third-party liability up to £2,000,000. You pay an excess on a claim. | You arrange it. Our scooter price guide puts typical cover at £40 to £300 a year. |
| Servicing and routine repairs | Included | About £50 to £120 a year for a service, plus repairs once the warranty ends |
| Breakdown | Motability Assist, every day of the year | Optional extra cover |
| Tyres | Replaced when worn through normal use (fair usage policy applies); punctures repaired on air-filled tyres | You pay |
| Batteries | Replaced if your dealer finds them faulty | £50 to £450 for a replacement set |
| DVLA registration (road scooters) | Done by the dealer; no vehicle tax to pay | You register it; no vehicle tax to pay |
| Cosmetic damage | You pay | You pay |
| Owning it at the end | No. Motability’s guide says you cannot buy the scooter when the lease ends. | Yes, and you can sell it |
A dealer must visit before you order. Motability says a home assessment is always needed to confirm the scooter can be stored safely and charged.
Motability lease or buying a scooter: how the numbers compare
We set Motability’s typical weekly costs beside the typical prices from our own mobility scooter prices by class, which we checked across UK retailers in September 2026. Those prices assume VAT relief, which people buying a scooter for their own long-term illness or disability can usually claim. We use three years because Motability’s scooter guide asks you to plan for your needs over the next three years.
| Class | Typical price to buy (VAT relief) | Typical price with VAT | Typical Motability cost a week | Weeks of lease that equal the purchase price | Lease cost over 3 years | Buy plus insurance and servicing over 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boot scooter (Motability: transportable) | £1,432 | £1,719 | £23.54 | About 61 weeks | £3,672 | £1,702 to £2,692 |
| Mid-size pavement scooter (Motability: pavement) | £1,300 | £1,560 | £25.42 | About 51 weeks | £3,965 | £1,570 to £2,560 |
| Road scooter (Motability: road-legal) | £2,700 | £3,240 | £35.95 | About 75 weeks | £5,608 | £2,970 to £3,960 |
Method: purchase price divided by the typical weekly cost. “Buy plus” adds three years of insurance (£40 to £300 a year) and servicing (£50 to £120 a year) from our price guide, and leaves out battery replacement and repairs, which are the costs a lease protects you from. The two sources group scooters slightly differently, so treat the matching as close, not exact.
On these figures the lease costs roughly £1,000 to £2,600 more over three years than buying and running the same class of scooter, and you have nothing to sell at the end. Against that, a scooter you own can need a battery set (up to £450), a controller or motor repair, or replacement after theft. The lease also takes the money a week at a time, which suits people who could not find £1,300 to £2,700 at once.
The rough rule: if you can afford to buy outright, expect to keep the scooter more than a year and a half, and are happy to arrange your own insurance, buying usually costs less. If you cannot pay up front, use a scooter hard enough to wear out batteries and tyres, or want one phone number for every problem, the lease does more of the work for you.
If buying looks like the better route, our guides to buying a used mobility scooter, scooter insurance and battery replacement costs cover the running side.
If your PIP or DLA award ends or changes during the lease
This is where most guides go quiet. Here is what Motability’s own pages and handbook say.
| What happens | What Motability says |
|---|---|
| Your award is due to end and you are waiting for a renewal decision | You no longer need 12 months left to order your next scooter. If your award ends within the next 12 months and you would rather wait for the decision, you can ask to extend your current lease. |
| You stop getting the qualifying allowance | You are no longer eligible, the lease ends and the scooter goes back. You only pay for the lease until you return it, and any Advance Payment is refunded pro rata. |
| A DLA to PIP reassessment does not give you the enhanced mobility rate | The allowance provider keeps paying your current allowance for four weeks after its decision. If you joined the scheme after 1 January 2014, you can keep the scooter for up to eight weeks after your last allowance payment. Those who joined before 2014 are offered advice and, where possible, the chance to buy the scooter. |
| You appeal the reassessment | You can keep the scooter for “a number of weeks” after your last DLA payment. Motability does not say how many, so ask before you rely on it. |
| You go into hospital | Allowance payments often stop after 28 days or more in hospital and restart when you come out. Tell Motability. |
| You move into a care home | The lease carries on as long as you still get the mobility allowance. Tell Motability your new address. |
From Motability’s pages on short award lease extensions, allowances ending, the reassessment support package and its scooter and powered wheelchair handbook (June 2025), read 16 October 2026. The reassessment support package page also says its specific package applied to unsuccessful reassessments until 31 July 2025, with standard support after that, so confirm what applies to you.
At the end of a Motability scooter lease
Motability writes and emails three months before the lease ends. If you take another scooter, the new one is delivered when the old one is collected, and you may get a £100 New Product Payment.
If you leave the scheme, you hand the scooter back to the dealer with its keys, charger and documents. You then receive a £100 End of Contract Payment, and Motability asks your allowance provider to start paying you the full allowance again, which can take up to six weeks.
Before you apply for a Motability scooter: what to check
- Check your award letter says higher or enhanced rate mobility, and how long it runs.
- Price two or three scooters on Motability’s search, and note the weekly cost and what is left from your allowance.
- Look up the same class on our scooter price guide and work out how many weeks of lease would pay for it.
- Ask a scheme dealer for the free home assessment, and ask whether the model needs an Advance Payment.
- If your PIP is due for review within the year, ask Motability about a lease extension before you order.
- Look up any dealer you are thinking of using on Review Mobility, and read its reviews, before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
How much of my PIP does a Motability scooter take?
Between £19.07 and £61.83 a week on the October to December 2026 price list, depending on the model. The typical boot scooter costs £23.54 a week and the typical road scooter £35.95, leaving £56.46 or £44.05 of the £80 enhanced mobility rate paid to you.
Can I get a Motability scooter on Attendance Allowance?
No. Motability lists Attendance Allowance among the benefits that do not qualify. You need the higher or enhanced rate mobility part of PIP, DLA or Adult Disability Payment, or one of the other qualifying allowances listed above.
Can I have a Motability car and a scooter at the same time?
No. Motability allows one lease at a time, so you choose between a car or wheelchair accessible vehicle and a scooter or powered wheelchair.
Can I buy my Motability scooter at the end of the lease?
Motability’s introductory guide says you cannot buy the scooter at the end of the lease. Its support package page mentions one exception: customers who joined before 2014 and lose their award after a reassessment may be offered the chance to buy, where possible.
Is it cheaper to buy a scooter than lease one through Motability?
Usually, if you keep it for more than a year or so. At typical prices, a lease costs as much as buying outright after about 51 weeks for a pavement scooter and about 75 weeks for a road scooter. The lease includes insurance, breakdown cover, repairs and faulty batteries, which you would otherwise pay for yourself.
Do Motability scooters need an Advance Payment?
The search results we read showed a weekly cost for each scooter and no Advance Payment figures. Motability says Advance Payments apply to “some vehicles” and are not refundable when you return them, so ask the dealer to confirm for the exact model.
