A stairlift repair in the UK costs roughly £110 to £140 for a straightforward visit, and the call-out fee alone runs from £40 to £185 depending on who you call. Beyond that, almost nothing is published. We read the pages of 31 UK stairlift firms in September 2026. Eight publish a call-out or repair figure. None publishes an itemised repair price list, and the three biggest names in the market, Acorn, Stannah and Handicare, publish no repair prices at all.
What we found when we went looking for repair prices
Every figure on this page came from a page we opened ourselves on 7 September 2026. We went through 31 companies: manufacturers, national installers, regional independents, spares retailers and one trade directory.
- 18 of 31 publish at least one hard number for repairs, servicing or cover.
- Only 8 of 31 publish an actual call-out or repair charge. The rest publish a service price or a cover-plan price, which is not the same thing.
- None of the 31 publishes an itemised repair price list, the kind a garage puts on the wall. Not one fault-by-fault price anywhere in the market.
- Acorn, Stannah and Handicare publish nothing. Every firm that does publish a call-out fee is a small regional installer or an independent.
That split matters when you are ringing round. The companies most likely to have fitted your lift are the least likely to tell you what a visit costs.
Published call-out and repair charges
| Company | Published charge | Date on the source page |
|---|---|---|
| Andi-Mobility Stairlifts (Derbyshire) | £40 call-out for repairs | None. Listed via Derbyshire County Council Trusted Trader |
| Budget Stairlifts Scotland | Call-out £60 to £80, labour £20 an hour on the standard plan | None |
| Dolphin Stairlifts | Call-outs from £80, servicing from £95 | Page last modified 29 November 2023 |
| Manchester Stairlifts | Pay as you go, £125 to £165 a visit | None |
| Norfolk Stairlifts | £130 for the first visit, covering labour to the first half hour, then £44 an hour | None |
| Berkshire Stairlifts | Standard call-out from £165, emergency call-out £325 | None |
| Senior Stairlifts | £185 standard call-out for repairs outside warranty, parts extra | 14 April 2026 |
| Acorn, Stannah, Handicare | No figure published | Checked 7 September 2026 |
Each figure read from the company’s own website on 7 September 2026. Where the page shows no date of its own, we say so, because an undated price is not a current price.
The one set of comparable figures anyone publishes
Checkatrade is the only source we found publishing like-for-like stairlift repair costs across the country. There is no national guide, only per-location pages, and none of them carries a date.
| City | Range published | Average |
|---|---|---|
| Derby | £88 to £144 | £111 |
| Leeds | £92 to £160 | £120 |
| Manchester | £95 to £162 | £122 |
| Birmingham | £101 to £175 | £132 |
| London | £103 to £187 | £138 |
Checkatrade stairlift repair search pages, read 7 September 2026. No date shown on any of them.
Read those two tables together and something odd falls out. Checkatrade’s averages, £111 to £138, sit below what Berkshire Stairlifts and Senior Stairlifts publish as a call-out fee before any parts, £165 and £185. Either Checkatrade’s figures describe simpler jobs, or the firms publishing the highest call-out fees are at the top of their local market. Ring three firms before you accept the first number.
Batteries: the most common repair, and the one with the biggest markup
Flat batteries are the commonest reason a stairlift stops, and beeping is nearly always a charging fault before it is anything else. See our guide to what to check when a stairlift stops working.
Installers publish a fitted price of £100 to £200 including labour and call-out. The batteries themselves are cheaper than most people expect. A UK spares retailer lists a standard sealed lead-acid pair at £46 excluding VAT, covering most Stannah, Acorn, Brooks, Minivator, Platinum, Thyssen, Meditek and Bruno lifts. A pair of small 12V 2.9Ah cells is £28.95.
Curved lifts are the exception, and it is worth knowing before you are quoted:
- Acorn 180 and Brooks 180 nickel-cadmium sets: £175 ex VAT
- Acorn 180 lithium-ion: £230 ex VAT, upgraded sets £250 ex VAT
- Handicare and Minivator 1100 long-life sets: £119 ex VAT
- Heavy-duty 12Ah sets: £85 ex VAT
On a curved lift, the parts alone can exceed the £100 to £200 that guides quote as the fitted price for the job. If your lift is curved, ask which battery type it takes before you accept a headline figure.
How long they last: installers say two to three years, two to four, two to five, or three to five, depending who you ask. No manufacturer we checked publishes a figure at all. Lithium-ion is quoted at up to ten years by one seller. Stairlift batteries are also covered in more detail in our battery guide.
What the parts cost
Published UK spares prices, all excluding VAT, which is relievable for a disabled person. Labour is on top.
| Part | Published price (ex VAT) |
|---|---|
| Safety edge switch, Acorn or Brooks 110, 120, 130 | £11.50 |
| Handset or remote, most brands | £35 to £160, and up to £595 for a Stannah 260 radio set |
| Seat belt, Stannah Sarum | £45 to £108 |
| Charger or power supply, Stannah 24V | £70 to £154 |
| Main control board, Stannah 300 | £95 |
| Motor, brake and gearbox unit, Acorn 120 or 130, refurbished | £195 |
| Main control board, Acorn 120 or 130 | £250 |
| Footrest motor, Handicare 1100 | £350 |
A1 Stairlift Spares product pages, read 7 September 2026. Refurbished boards carry a six-month warranty and refurbished motors twelve months, per the retailer.
Two things follow from that table. A control board or a footrest motor plus a call-out puts a single repair into the £400 to £550 range on a lift that may have cost £2,000 new. And parts for genuinely old lifts are still stocked: the same retailer lists spares for Acorn 110, Stannah 228 and 240, Minivator 950 and Brooks Lincoln pre-2002 models.
Emergency and out-of-hours
Very few firms publish a premium for an urgent visit. Two do. Berkshire Stairlifts publishes an emergency call-out at £325 against a standard call-out from £165, roughly double. Manchester Stairlifts publishes out-of-hours emergency call-outs at £150 to £200, waived for customers on comprehensive cover.
If someone in the house cannot manage the stairs without the lift, that premium is the thing to establish before you need it, not during.
Service plans and breakdown cover
Cover is where most firms do publish, and the spread is wide.
| Provider | Published annual price | What the top tier says it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Aspire Stairlifts | £80 Bronze to £285 Diamond | Service plus replacement of worn parts. The page does not say which tier gets what |
| Mobilitybase (Kent and London) | £95 Bronze to £345 Gold straight, £445 Gold curved | Parts and labour included, unlimited call-outs, 24/7 |
| Halton Stairlifts | From £120 | One annual service, call-out parts and labour included |
| Budget Stairlifts Scotland | £60 to £80 standard, £210 premium | Premium includes all call-out, parts and labour |
| Manchester Stairlifts | Service from £95, comprehensive £195 to £295 | Annual service, parts, labour, unlimited call-outs |
| Companion Stairlifts | From £270 | Repair and replacement of parts, call-outs, 24-hour helpline |
| Somerset Stairlifts | £250 Silver to £395 Gold curved | Annual service, new batteries when needed, 24-hour call-out, all labour and parts |
Read from each company’s own pages, 7 September 2026. Somerset’s Silver inclusions could not be read: the product page returned an error on three attempts, so only its price is shown.
A one-off service, if you would rather pay as you go, is published at £85 by Parkgate Mobility and Unicorn Stairlifts, £94 to £95 by Somerset, Dolphin and Prestige, and £120 to £140 by Norfolk Stairlifts. Our stairlift servicing guide covers what a service should include.
When a repair stops being worth it
Almost nobody publishes a threshold. Two firms do, and they are further apart than you would expect.
- Mobilitybase states that lifts over three years old considered uneconomical to repair are not covered, and names the main drive motor and the main controller board as the failures likely to trigger that.
- Somerset Stairlifts will not sell a maintenance contract at all for a stairlift over seven years old.
Set that against a typical working life. Installers put a well-maintained lift at seven to fifteen years. So there is a long middle period where your lift still works, still has parts available, and is already past the age at which some firms will insure it. That is the window in which repair bills need watching against the price of replacing. See how long a stairlift lasts and what a new one costs.
What you are entitled to, whatever they charge
The British Healthcare Trades Association Code of Practice is an approved code under the Chartered Trading Standards Institute scheme, and its after-sales annex sets out things most customers never hear about. A BHTA member is free to keep its prices off its website. It is not free to keep them from you.
- A clear explanation of the basis for charging on work not covered by warranty, and a written estimate in advance where practicable.
- An itemised invoice breaking down labour and parts after the work is done.
- A minimum three-month guarantee on all repair work. This one is a concrete right and almost nobody advertises it.
- A response, and a visit where appropriate, normally within three working days, and no customer left without equipment they rely on for more than 14 days.
- Details of out-of-hours arrangements, if any exist.
Check whether the firm is actually a BHTA member before you rely on it. If a repair goes wrong within three months, that guarantee is the first thing to quote.
A note on dates, because it matters here
Of the seller pages carrying repair prices, only about half show any date. The most widely cited call-out figure in this market, Dolphin’s from £80, sits on a page last modified in November 2023 that tells you to contact them for up-to-date prices. Treat any published repair price as a starting marker and get the number in writing for your own lift.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to repair a stairlift in the UK?
Checkatrade puts a typical repair between £88 and £187 depending on the city, averaging £111 in Derby and £138 in London. Firms that publish their own call-out fee charge between £40 and £185 before parts. A repair needing a control board or a footrest motor can reach £400 to £550 once parts and labour are added.
How much is a stairlift call-out fee?
Of 31 UK firms whose pages we read in September 2026, eight published a call-out or repair charge: £40, £60 to £80, £80, £125 to £165, £130, £165, £185 and £185 plus VAT. Acorn, Stannah and Handicare publish nothing.
How much does it cost to replace stairlift batteries?
Installers publish £100 to £200 fitted. The batteries alone are listed at £46 excluding VAT for a standard pair covering most straight lifts. Curved lifts are dearer: Acorn 180 lithium-ion sets are listed at £230 to £250 excluding VAT, which is more than the usual quoted fitted price for the whole job.
How long do stairlift batteries last?
Installers say between two and five years, with the ranges varying by seller. No manufacturer we checked publishes a figure. One seller quotes up to ten years for lithium-ion.
Is my stairlift repair guaranteed?
If the firm is a BHTA member, yes. Its Code of Practice requires a minimum three-month guarantee on all repair work, a written estimate in advance where practicable, and an itemised invoice showing labour and parts separately.
When is a stairlift not worth repairing?
There is no industry standard. One provider treats lifts over three years old as potentially uneconomical to repair when the drive motor or main board fails. Another will not sell a maintenance contract on a lift over seven years old, while installers put a well-maintained lift at seven to fifteen years of service.
