Best Shower Chairs and Stools UK: 9 Checked Against the Makers’ Own Documents

Last Updated on September 30, 2026 | Published: January 20, 2025

Shower stall with white subway tiles and a glass door, overlaid with the article title 'Best adjustable shower chairs' and a Review Mobility logo in the corner (hero image).

The short answer

We ranked nine shower chairs and stools sold on Amazon UK against their makers’ own product pages and instructions on 30 September 2026:

Want a seat fixed to the wall instead? See wall-mounted and folding shower seats. Bathing in a bath? See bath lifts and bath boards.

Last checked 30 September 2026. We have not tested these chairs and stools. Every figure in the ranking comes from the maker’s own product page or instructions, read on that date, and where two of those documents disagree we say so. Links to Amazon are paid links: we earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. No maker paid to appear, and none saw this page before it went live.

A shower chair or stool lets you sit down to wash, which takes away the risk of losing your balance on a wet floor. A stool has no back and takes little space; a chair adds a backrest, and sometimes arms to push up on. Most have legs that adjust in steps, rubber feet, and a seat with holes so water drains away.

What checking the documents turned up

Drive DeVilbiss’s product page for its round shower stool (12004KDR) promises a “lifetime limited warranty”. The stool’s own instructions, issued March 2025, give “one year from date of purchase”. We read both on 30 September 2026.

4 of the 9 have a figure their maker gives two ways, and three of those four are Drive DeVilbiss models. The Drive shower bench page and its instructions disagree on seat height, seat width and overall size (30 cm wide against 50 cm), and the rotating stool’s seat height, width and weight all differ between page and instructions.

Only 1 of the 9 carries a medical device mark in its documents (the NRS swivel stool’s manual). 3 of the 9 publish no seat-height range at all, which is the one figure you need to check a chair against the user’s leg length. Weight limits run from 120 kg (all three Aidapt models) to 165 kg (NRS chair with arms).

How we ranked them

We started from the free-standing shower chairs and stools Amazon UK sells new from makers who publish their own documents, then read every product page and set of instructions we could open. We ranked on five things, most important first:

  • The user weight limit, and whether the maker’s documents agree on it.
  • A published seat-height range.
  • Whether the documents agree with each other, and whether the maker still lists it in the UK.
  • Support: back, arms, handles and drainage.
  • A warranty period stated in writing.

Price was a tie-breaker only. The boxes on this page show Amazon’s live price. Shower chairs are often supplied free on loan after an occupational therapy assessment from the council; see the FAQ. If you buy, a UK supplier can sell one for a disabled person’s own use without VAT; see our VAT relief guide.

1. Aidapt Shower Chair with Back (VB540S / VB540W): best shower chair overall

Aidapt’s shower chair with back adjusts from 35.5 cm to 53.3 cm, the joint widest range in this ranking with its padded stool sibling, so it can suit short and tall users. The seat and back are perforated to drain, the seat has built-in handles, and the padded VB540W version adds soft seat and back pads and a shower-head holder. Both share one manual and one set of specifications.

The paperwork has two small slips. The VB540W page says “no tools needed” but the shared manual says to tighten the screws with a screwdriver, and the VB540S page promises 8 height settings in its bullets and 7 in its own spec table. The limit is 120 kg, lower than several chairs here.

Our verdict (documents last checked 30 September 2026)

The widest height range here with a back and drainage, at a 120 kg limit.

Best for: most users who need a back to lean on, from short to tall.

Not for: users over 120 kg, or anyone who needs arms to push up on.

Warranty12 months

Where the maker’s own documents disagree

Assembly. The VB540W page says “minimal assembly required—no tools needed”; the manual says to tighten the screws “with an appropriate tool, such as a screwdriver”.

Height settings. The VB540S page says “8 numbered height adjustment settings” in its bullets and “Number of Height Settings 7” in its spec table.

2. NRS Height Adjustable Shower Chair with Arms (M48295): best for heavier users

NRS’s shower chair has a backrest and fixed-height arms to push up on, drainage holes in the seat and non-slip rubber feet, and at 165 kg it has the highest limit of the UK-listed chairs here. It weighs 3.33 kg.

The product page is the only NRS document we could find. It gives no seat-height range even though the chair is height adjustable, no warranty, and converts 165 kg to “25 st” (it is nearer 26).

Our verdict (documents last checked 30 September 2026)

Arms, a back and the highest UK-listed limit here, backed by a thin product page.

Best for: heavier users, and anyone who pushes up on arms to stand.

Not for: anyone who needs to check seat height or warranty in writing before buying.

3. Aidapt Aluminium Folding Shower Stool (VB541A): best for small bathrooms

Aidapt’s folding stool folds flat to 66 by 50 by 7 cm, so it can hang on a hook or go in a suitcase, and it weighs 1.9 kg. The seat is 50 cm wide and 30 cm deep, with side handles and drainage holes, and Aidapt’s page and November 2025 manual agree, including that no tools are needed.

The height only goes from 37.5 cm to 42 cm, in four steps, so it is a low seat. Amazon calls it a chair; Aidapt calls it a stool, and it has no back.

Our verdict (documents last checked 30 September 2026)

Folds flat, weighs 1.9 kg and has consistent paperwork, but sits low.

Best for: small bathrooms, shared bathrooms and travel.

Not for: taller users who need a seat above 42 cm.

4. NRS Swivel Shower Stool (S62776): 360-degree swivel, two-year guarantee

The NRS swivel stool turns through 360 degrees, which helps you face the controls or turn to get out without twisting on a wet floor. It weighs 1.8 kg, and its manual gives a 135 kg limit and a 24-month guarantee for home use.

The limit and warranty come from the manual only; the product page gives neither. No seat-height range is published, and the manual says not to use it in a bath. It is the only seat here whose documents carry a medical device mark.

Our verdict (documents last checked 30 September 2026)

A swivel seat with a two-year warranty, but no published seat height.

Best for: users who need to turn while seated.

Not for: use in a bath, which NRS rules out.

5. Drive DeVilbiss Rotating Seat and Tray (RTL12061EU): rotating stool, lifetime warranty

This Drive stool has a seat that rotates both ways and locks in four positions, and a removable storage tray for shampoo and soap. It takes 135 kg, and the instructions give a lifetime limited warranty for the original buyer.

The product page and the instructions disagree on four figures: seat height (41 to 58 cm, or 41 to 55.5 cm), seat width (36 or 35 cm), overall width (38 or 37 cm) and weight (3 kg or 2.7 kg). The differences are small, but the top seat height matters for tall users.

Our verdict (documents last checked 30 September 2026)

A lockable rotating seat with a lifetime warranty, and four figures given two ways.

Best for: users who need to turn while seated and like somewhere to keep toiletries.

Not for: tall users relying on the 58 cm top height.

TypeRound stool, rotating seat with 4 locking positions, tray
Max user135 kg (21 st)

Where the maker’s own documents disagree

Seat height: “Seat Height 41-58cm” on the page; “41 – 55.5 cm (16″ – 22″)” in the instructions.

Weight: 3 kg on the page, “Total mass … 2.7 kg” in the instructions. Seat width 36 against 35 cm; overall width 38 against 37 cm.

6. Drive DeVilbiss Round Shower Stool (12004KDR): simple, with two warranties

Drive’s round stool is the simplest seat here: a 33 cm round seat on push-button legs that adjust from 34 cm to 52 cm, weighing 2 kg. The seat-height range and overall size agree across the page and the March 2025 instructions.

The warranty does not. The page promises a “lifetime limited warranty”; the instructions say “one year from date of purchase”. The page also gives a 33 cm seat width and a 135 kg limit, where the instructions give 30 cm and 136 kg.

Our verdict (documents last checked 30 September 2026)

A light, simple stool with a good height range, and two different warranties.

Best for: users who only need a perch in a small shower.

Not for: anyone counting on the lifetime warranty.

TypeRound stool, no back
Max user135 kg (page) or 136 kg (instructions)

Where the maker’s own documents disagree

Warranty. The product page says “lifetime limited warranty”. The instructions (IFU 12004KDR, 2025-03) say “one year from date of purchase”.

Seat width 33 cm against 30 cm; weight limit 135 kg against 136 kg.

7. Drive DeVilbiss Shower Stool / Bench (12003KDR): a back can be added, but the sizes disagree

Drive sells this as a free-standing shower stool with a contoured seat, integral handholds, drainage holes and suction-style feet, and a backrest can be clipped on later (the 12002KD version comes with one). Page and instructions agree on 135 kg and a one-year warranty.

They disagree on its size. The page gives a seat width of 30 cm and an overall size of 31 by 48 cm; the instructions give a seat 50 cm wide and an overall size of 50 by 53 cm. The page may have swapped width and depth, but it also gives a different height range, 44 to 54 cm against 40 to 50 cm.

Our verdict (documents last checked 30 September 2026)

A bench you can add a back to later, with sizes that differ by up to 20 cm between page and instructions.

Best for: users who may need a backrest later.

Not for: a narrow shower tray, until you have checked the real size.

TypeBench stool, backrest optional
Max user135 kg (21 st)
Seat height44 to 54 cm (page) or 40 to 50 cm (instructions)

8. Aidapt Shower Stool with Seat Padding (VB540BP): padded stool, page only

The padded stool is the backless version of Aidapt’s shower chair, with the same wide 35.5 to 53.3 cm height range, a padded perforated seat, a shower-head holder and a 120 kg limit. It weighs 1.95 kg.

The product page is the only document: its “Download User Manual” link returns an error, so the “No Tools Needed” claim could not be checked, and the sister chair’s manual does call for a screwdriver.

Our verdict (documents last checked 30 September 2026)

A padded stool with a wide height range, and no working manual.

Best for: users who want padding and do not need a back.

Not for: users over 120 kg.

9. Drive Medical Premium Series Shower Chair (RTL12505): US import with arms

This is a US Drive Medical chair sold on Amazon UK. It has a removable back and arms, all tool-free, and is rated at 350 lb (about 159 kg) with a limited lifetime warranty, according to Drive Medical’s US page and spec sheet, which agree.

Drive DeVilbiss UK does not list it, so UK support is uncertain, and no seat-height range is published anywhere even though the height adjusts in half-inch steps.

Our verdict (documents last checked 30 September 2026)

Back and arms and a high rating, but a US-only product with no published seat height.

Best for: buyers who want removable arms and are comfortable with a US import.

Not for: anyone who wants UK maker support.

Chairs and stools we checked but did not rank

NRS L99405 and NRS NUVO: both are wheeled mobile shower chairs, not free-standing seats. NRS L97718 and M99138 stools: product pages only, and their types are covered by better-documented seats above.

Before you buy: height, space and the floor

  • Seat height: with feet flat on the floor, the seat should be about level with the back of the knee. Check the maker’s published range covers it.
  • Space: measure the shower tray or floor area, allowing for the legs, which splay wider than the seat.
  • Floor: rubber feet need a flat floor. On a sloping wet-room floor, set the legs so the seat is level.
  • Support: if the user pushes up to stand, choose arms or integral handles, not a round stool.
  • Getting in: a stool or chair does not help you over a bath side or a shower step. For a bath, look at bath boards or a bath lift instead.

Watch: using a shower chair safely

This demonstration from the Royal Melbourne Hospital shows how to set up and use a shower stool or chair safely.

Frequently asked questions about shower chairs and stools

What is the best shower chair in the UK?

Of the nine shower chairs and stools we checked against their makers’ documents on 30 September 2026, the Aidapt Shower Chair with Back ranks first: it adjusts from 35.5 cm to 53.3 cm and has a back and drainage, though its limit is 120 kg. For heavier users, the NRS chair with arms is rated to 165 kg.

Should I get a shower chair or a shower stool?

A stool takes less space and is easy to move, but gives no support to lean back on. A chair with a back is better for anyone who tires or needs to sit for longer, and arms help anyone who pushes up to stand. A swivel or rotating stool helps if turning while seated is hard.

What height should a shower chair be?

About the height from the floor to the back of the knee, with feet flat. Among the seats we ranked, published ranges run from 34 cm (Drive round stool) to 58 cm (Drive rotating stool, per its product page). Three of the nine publish no range at all.

How much weight can a shower chair take?

The nine we ranked are rated from 120 kg (all three Aidapt models) to 165 kg (NRS chair with arms), with the US Drive Medical chair at 350 lb, about 159 kg. The limit is for the seat alone, so do not stand on it or use it as a step.

Can I get a shower chair free?

Often, yes. In England your council’s adult social care team can arrange an occupational therapy assessment, and shower chairs and stools are commonly lent free as community equipment. See how community equipment works.

Can I use a shower stool in the bath?

Only if the maker says so. NRS says its swivel stool must not be used in a bath. For bathing, a bath board, bath seat or bath lift is designed for the job; see bath lifts.
