What the Bealift actually is

The Bealift is a product rather than a shop, and it is unlike most bath lifts sold in the UK. It is a manual hammock seat on a double U-frame: the outer U acts as a lever, and one helper swings it through an arc to lower the user into the bath and raise them out again. There is no motor, no battery and nothing to charge. It was designed for disabled children and smaller adults, and it is made in Coventry by Bitteswell Employment Alliance, a registered society (number IP24510R) that has been going since 1984 and sells direct.

What to check before you buy

• Check the weight limit against the user honestly. At 63kg it rules out most adults, and this is the most common reason the Bealift is the wrong choice.
• It needs a helper. Unlike a powered bath lift it cannot be used independently, so it suits a carer and child, or a couple, rather than someone bathing alone.
• Measure your bath internally and externally before ordering, since the frame sits on the rim.
• Ask an occupational therapist whether it suits the lifting technique the helper can safely manage. A manual arc lift is easier on the back than a hoist for some people and worse for others.
• Ask about the refurbishment service if you are buying second-hand, as replacing the hammock and straps restores the parts that wear.
