Threshold ramps are the cheapest ramp you can buy and the one most often bought wrongly. The mistake is almost always the same: people buy for the height of the step and ignore the length the gradient requires.
The arithmetic is unforgiving. Approved Document M sets a maximum gradient of 1 in 12, with 1 in 15 preferred. A 50mm door threshold therefore wants around 600mm of ramp. A 200mm step wants 2.4 metres, and at the preferred gradient, 3 metres. Almost nothing sold as a threshold ramp is long enough for a 200mm step, and using a short one turns a ramp into a launch.
How to choose a threshold ramp
Measure the rise, then do the sum. Rise in millimetres, multiplied by twelve, is the minimum length in millimetres. If the answer is longer than the ramps you are looking at, you need a folding or modular ramp, not a threshold wedge.
Rubber or aluminium. Rubber wedges are heavy, stay put by their own weight, and suit a permanent indoor or sheltered threshold. Aluminium is lighter, usually folds, and suits something that has to be moved or taken in the car.
Check the load rating against the whole load. That is the occupant, the chair or scooter, and anybody pushing. Powered chairs and scooters are far heavier than people estimate.
Width matters as much as length. The ramp needs to be wider than the wheelbase with room for error, because a wheel that drops off the edge at an angle is how people tip.
Think about the door swing. An outward opening door and a ramp at the threshold interfere with each other constantly, and this is the detail people discover after fitting.

Best for a small threshold: self adhesive rubber threshold ramp
The right product for a doorway lip or a low door bar, which is what most people actually have. Self adhesive so it stays where you put it, and rubber so it grips in the wet.
The catch: only suitable for a genuinely small rise. Check the height it is designed for against your own step rather than assuming. Around £13.

Best anti slip surface: OSDUE threshold ramp
Textured surface, which matters more than it sounds on a ramp that will be wet half the year. Suitable for wheelchairs, walking frames and wheeled trolleys alike.
The catch: anti slip surfaces collect grit and need sweeping, and a ramp with grit on it is less grippy, not more. Around £16.

Best for a wider doorway: 100cm rubber threshold ramp
A metre wide, which covers a standard doorway with margin for approaching at a slight angle. That margin is worth having, because most tipping incidents happen when a wheel finds the edge.
The catch: rubber at this size is heavy, which is the point if it is permanent and a problem if you need to move it. Around £18.

Best budget pair: threshold ramps for doorways
An inexpensive way to deal with two thresholds at once, which is the common situation with a front door and a back door, or a doorway and a patio door.
The catch: budget ramps are usually shorter, so check the rise they are rated for and do the twelve times sum before ordering. Around £14.

Best for a real step: The Ramp People bridge threshold ramp
A proper engineered ramp rather than a wedge, from a UK supplier that specialises in access. If your rise is beyond what a rubber wedge can bridge at a safe gradient, this is the category you should be in.
The catch: many times the price of a wedge, which is what a ramp of the correct length costs. That is the honest trade off rather than a reason to buy something too short. Around £107.

How long does a wheelchair ramp need to be?
Multiply the rise by twelve for the maximum permitted gradient, or by fifteen for the preferred one. A 50mm threshold needs around 600mm. A 150mm step needs 1.8 metres. A 200mm step needs 2.4 metres and ideally 3.
Is a steeper ramp ever acceptable?
For a very short rise and with somebody pushing, people do use steeper ramps, and self propelling up anything steeper than 1 in 12 is beyond most users. Going down a steep ramp is the more dangerous direction, and that is where the tipping happens.
Do I pay VAT on a ramp?
Ramps supplied to disabled people for personal use can be zero rated, with the declaration made at the point of purchase. This applies to portable ramps as well as installed ones, and it cannot be reclaimed later.
Can I get one funded?
A Disabled Facilities Grant can pay for permanent access works after an occupational therapy assessment, means tested for adults and not for children. Portable ramps are usually a self purchase, and occupational therapy sometimes provides them.
Does it need to be fixed down?
Anything that can shift when a wheel hits it does. Rubber wedges are often heavy enough to stay put indoors, and self adhesive versions solve it outright. A ramp that moves as you go up it is more dangerous than no ramp.
What about a threshold ramp for a mobility scooter?
Check the load rating and the width carefully, since scooters are heavier and wider than a manual chair, and check the ground clearance too. A scooter that grounds out on the crest of a wedge stops dead, which is its own hazard.
