A portable wheelchair ramp turns a step or a doorway threshold into something you can wheel over, at home or out and about. The single most important thing is getting the length right for the height of the step, because that decides how steep and how safe the slope is. Here is how to choose, and four we rate.
How to choose a wheelchair ramp
Length versus step height. This is the one that matters. As a rough guide, aim for about 1 unit of rise to 12 units of ramp if the user wheels themselves. So a 15 cm step needs around 1.8 m of ramp to self-propel safely. A helper pushing can manage a steeper slope, but gentler is always safer.
Threshold or full ramp. A small rubber or aluminium threshold ramp handles a single doorstep or raised threshold. A longer folding ramp is for steps and kerbs.
Weight capacity. Check the ramp holds the combined weight of the chair and the person with room to spare.
Portability and grip. Folding suitcase-style ramps carry easily and store flat. Look for a non-slip surface and raised edges to keep the wheels on track.
