A bidet attachment solves a problem people rarely say out loud. Wiping requires reaching behind you, twisting the shoulder and gripping, and arthritis, a shoulder problem, a hip replacement or one working arm can all make it impossible. A bidet does that job with a lever instead, and for a lot of people it is the difference between managing alone and needing help.

The specialist versions sold through mobility retailers run from around six hundred pounds. A non electric attachment that clamps under your existing toilet seat costs about twenty. That gap is why this page exists.

How to choose a bidet seat or attachment

Non electric or electric. A non electric attachment fits under your existing seat, needs no power, and sprays cold mains water. An electric seat replaces the seat entirely and gives warm water, a warm seat and usually a dryer. Cold water in a cold bathroom in February is the single most common reason a cheap one goes unused.

Check where the control is. A side mounted dial is easier to reach than a control at the back, and that matters more than anything else on this page for somebody with limited reach or shoulder pain.

Measure your toilet. These fit standard UK toilets, and non standard, square or wall hung pans often defeat them. Check the fixing hole spacing and the shape of the pan before ordering.

Electric means an electrician. A mains powered seat needs a fused spur near the toilet installed to Part P standards. It is not a plug in job, and budgeting for the electrician is part of the price.

Anything plumbed in should be WRAS approved. That is the UK water regulations approval scheme, and it matters because a backflow risk into the mains supply is exactly what the regulations exist to prevent.

Best overall: Hibbent hot and cold sprayer bidet seat

Takes a hot feed as well as a cold one, which is the feature that decides whether somebody keeps using a bidet through winter. Still mechanical rather than mains powered, so there is no electrician involved and nothing to go wrong electrically.

The catch: it needs a hot water connection near the toilet, which not every bathroom has. Check under your basin before ordering. Around £55.

Best budget: non electric bidet attachment

The cheapest way to find out whether a bidet solves your problem at all. Clamps under the existing seat, connects to the toilet cistern supply, and needs no power and no plumber for most installations.

The catch: cold water only. If the bathroom is cold, this is the version that ends up unused, so treat it as a trial rather than a permanent answer. Around £24.

Best fit for most UK toilets: Hibbent attachment with adjustable nozzle

An adjustable nozzle matters because the right spray position is individual, and a fixed nozzle that is slightly wrong is a fixed nozzle you stop using. This one adjusts and fits the common UK pan shapes.

The catch: still cold feed, and the clamp adds a few millimetres under the seat, which raises the seat height very slightly. Around £29.

Best known brand: TUSHY Classic 3.0

The brand most people have heard of, with a self cleaning nozzle and a solid pressure dial. Worth the premium mainly for the build and the support if something goes wrong.

The catch: several times the price of a functionally similar attachment, and still a cold water unit at this price. Around £100.

Best dual nozzle: SAMODRA dual nozzle attachment

A separate front nozzle as well as a rear one, which matters for women and is often the deciding feature. Side mounted control dial that is easy to reach without twisting.

The catch: two nozzles means two things to keep clean, and the self cleaning function is worth checking on the listing. Around £33.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a plumber to fit a bidet attachment?

Usually not for a non electric one. It connects to the flexible hose feeding the cistern using the supplied T piece, which is a spanner job for most people. If your cistern feed is an unusual size or is buried in the wall, get a plumber rather than forcing it.

Can I get VAT relief on a bidet?

Bidets and bidet seats supplied to disabled or chronically ill people for their personal use can be zero rated, and the declaration has to be made at the point of purchase. Ask before you check out, because VAT cannot be reclaimed afterwards.

Will it work with a soft close seat?

Often yes, since the attachment sits between the pan and the seat, but it raises the seat slightly and some soft close hinges do not tolerate that. Check the hinge type before ordering.

Is cold water actually a problem?

It is the main reason these get abandoned. It is bearable in summer and unpleasant in a cold bathroom in winter. If the person will use it daily and year round, pay for a hot feed model or an electric seat.

Are they hygienic?

A self cleaning nozzle that retracts when not in use is the feature to look for, and the nozzle should be cleaned regularly like any other bathroom fitting. Avoid making health claims either way, since this is about reach and dignity rather than infection.

Could the council supply one instead?

Possibly. Powered bidet seats appear in occupational therapy provision for people with limited hand or arm function, so it is worth asking for an assessment before spending several hundred pounds privately.
