The Access Card is a nationally recognised photo ID scheme designed to help disabled people communicate their access requirements quickly and clearly when visiting venues, events and attractions across the UK. Run by Nimbus Disability, a social enterprise founded by disabled people, the card translates a person’s disability or impairment into a set of recognised symbols representing the barriers they face and the reasonable adjustments they may need. The scheme works by allowing venue staff to see at a glance what support a cardholder requires, removing the need for lengthy explanations or additional documentation at each visit. The Access Card is widely accepted at major UK venues including theatres, concert halls, sports stadiums, theme parks and festivals, with integration into ticketing systems such as Ticketmaster for streamlined booking of accessible seats and companion tickets. An Access Card costs £15 and remains valid for three years. Applications are open to anyone with a disability or long-term condition, including those who do not claim disability benefits. Since 2006, Nimbus Disability has grown the scheme significantly, earning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation in 2022. The Access Card has become an established accessibility standard, helping thousands of disabled people access leisure and cultural experiences with greater ease and dignity.
